ALAN WHITE - REST IN PEACE

Jerry and Lois Photography

It is with deep sadness that YES announce Alan White, their much-loved drummer and friend of 50 years, has passed away, aged 72, after a short illness. The news has shocked and stunned the entire YES family. Alan had been looking forward to the forthcoming UK Tour, to celebrating his 50th Anniversary with YES and their iconic Close To The Edge album, where Alan's journey with YES began in July 1972. He recently celebrated the 40th Anniversary of his marriage to his loving wife Gigi. Alan passed away, peacefully at home.

Alan is considered to be one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. He was born in 1949 in County Durham and joined YES on 30th July 1972 for the Close to the Edge Tour. He had previously worked with John Lennon's Plastic Ono band after a phone call in 1969 to play at the Toronto Rock Festival. Alan continued working with Lennon including on the Imagine album and with George Harrison on All Things Must Pass. He also worked with several other musicians over the years, including Ginger Baker's Air Force, Joe Cocker, Gary Wright, Doris Troy and Billy Preston to name but a few. Alan White was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of YES in 2017.

A number of health setbacks since 2016, had restricted Alan's time on stage with YES on recent tours with Jay Schellen filling in and Alan joining the band, to great applause, towards the end of each set.

YES will dedicate their 50th Anniversary Close to the Edge UK Tour in June to White.

ALAN WHITE - A TRIBUTE FROM GIGI, JESSE AND CASSI

Cassi, Jesse, Alan and Gigi White

Alan White, our beloved husband, dad, and grandpa, passed away at the age of 72 at his Seattle-area home on May 26, 2022, after a brief illness.

Throughout his life and six-decade career, Alan was many things to many people: a certified rock star to fans around the world; band mate to a select few, and gentleman and friend to all who met him.

Alan was born in Pelton, County Durham, England on June 14, 1949. He began piano lessons at the age of six, began playing the drums at age twelve, and has been performing publicly since the age of thirteen.

Throughout the 1960s, Alan honed his craft with a variety of bands, including The Downbeats, The Gamblers, Billy Fury, Alan Price Big Band, Bell and Arc, Terry Reid, Happy Magazine (later called Griffin), and Balls with Trevor Burton (The Move) and Denny Laine (Wings).

In 1968, Alan joined Ginger Baker's Airforce, a new group that was put together by the former drummer of Cream and other noted musicians from England's music scene including Steve Winwood, formerly of Traffic.

In 1969, Alan received what he thought at the time to be a prank phone call, but it was John Lennon calling to ask Alan to join the Plastic Ono Band. The next day Alan found himself learning songs in the back of an airliner headed to Toronto with Lennon, Yoko Ono, Eric Clapton, and Klaus Voormann. The ensuing album, Live Peace in Toronto 1969, sold millions of copies, peaking at number 10 on the charts.

Alan's association with Lennon continued, recording singles like 'Instant Karma' and the subsequent landmark album, Imagine, with Alan providing drums for the title song, 'Jealous Guy', and 'How Do You Sleep'. Alan's work with Lennon led to an introduction to George Harrison, who asked Alan to perform on the album All Things Must Pass, including the single, 'My Sweet Lord', released in 1970. Alan subsequently worked with many artists for the Apple label, including Billy Preston, Rosetta Hightower, and Doris Troy.

Alan joined YES on July 27, 1972, and with only three days to learn the music, YES opened their US tour before 15,000 fans in Dallas, Texas on July 30, 1972. Alan has been with YES ever since, and with the passing of founding member, Chris Squire, in June 2015, Alan is the longest continuously serving band member.

Alan is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and May White (née Thrower), his sister-in-law, Mindi Hall, and many loyal furry companions. He is survived by his wife of forty years (May 15, 1982) Rogena "Gigi" (née Walberg), his children, Jesse (Emily), their two children JJ and Ellie, and Cassi (Kela), and sister-in-law Andrea Holmqvist (Robert).

It is with great sadness that I join with the other members of Yes to acknowledge the passing of our dearest friend and drummer, Alan White.

He gave so many of his best years to the band and was a true believer and determined professional til the very end.

Being a kind and loving human being just came naturally to him, with his mellow, non-confrontational personality and abundant generosity, which made him so popular with his friends and everyone he met.

With our deep condolences, we send our love and thoughts to his wife Gigi, their children and grandchildren.

ALAN WHITE - A TRIBUTE FROM GEOFF DOWNES

Jerry and Lois Photography

It is with the utmost sadness I have received the news of the passing of my dearest friend and bandmate Alan White. He was truly one of the greatest men I have ever met. Honest, loyal, passionate, caring, kind, generous, considerate, charitable, funny – so many superlatives, too many to mention – simply, an all-round top guy and one of the best. And despite living for many years in his adopted hometown of Seattle, he never lost that Geordie wit, irony and charm.

As a musician he was unique in every way, and his powerhouse technique influenced whole generations of drummers and percussionists – an absolute legend in the true sense of the word. He was a joy to share the same stage with, often glancing over at the keyboard riser with a wink and a smile, but still laying down that solid, yet intricate groove as only he could. This was Alan – a genius who never took himself too seriously.

But beyond his skills, beneath was one of the nicest, loveliest people you could ever hope to meet. We spent a lot of time together, particularly on tour with YES over the years. We had some great laughs together, became very close, and always looked after each other to the point where they started referring to us as 'The Odd Couple'!

Such great times remembered, and I have to say how much I feel privileged and honoured to have been a part of his life. I will miss him enormously. Losing a soul mate is always so tough, and my deepest thoughts and sincerest condolences are with Gigi in particular and Alan's family at this sad time. I am absolutely devastated for them beyond words.

All I can really say right now is: "Thank you Alan for being you and for being such a great friend."

RIP GD x

I'm devastated with the loss of our beloved AW (as we fondly called him). My heart is breaking for Gigi and the entire White family.

I first met Alan somewhere back in 1988/89. Long before I started playing bass I was a drummer. Alan was my inspirational North Star and remains my favorite drummer. I first saw him playing live with YES in 1977, it was the Going For The One tour. As I watched in awe I took careful notice of his attire. 'Stan Smith' tennis shoes, wrist bands, head band etc… the next day I went out and got those same items, in hopes I could channel the magic that came from his playing. That spirit has never left me, it lives in me now and always will.

When I first joined YES in the 90s, I would always be able to confide in Alan, he would be there like a big brother, reassuring me no matter what would happen he and I would have a special unbreakable bond and remain in each other's lives somehow, from skiing in the Alps together to continuing on with the YES rhythm section after Chris sadly passed, AW was someone I could always turn to when I needed a shoulder to lean on.

I have so many fond memories of my relationship with the man I worshipped, respected and came to love like a brother. I've never lost that feeling despite life's twists and turns, which are many.

Losing Chris was so very hard or me… this is just as difficult to process, perhaps even harder as AW was the first hero in my musical journey. I loved Alan and always will.

Rest In Peace my brother
Love you always
Billy

ALAN WHITE - A TRIBUTE FROM JON DAVISON

Words are near impossible to express accurately my feelings of grief at the loss of my beloved friend and band mate, Alan White.

I'm eternally grateful to Alan and his wonderful wife Gigi for the immediate warmth and kindness they showed me when I first joined the band. Top class and genuine people!

Alan was not only the beating heart of Yes, but lived and loved straight from his huge heart.

I will miss you my brother, my hero. I am so much the better for having known you. God speed on the silent wings of freedom!

Jon

ALAN WHITE - A TRIBUTE FROM JAY SCHELLEN

Steve Howe, Geoff Downes, Jay Schellen, Alan White, Jon Davison, Billy Sherwood and Tony Kaye

I have always felt a heartfelt kinship with all YES fans, growing up I too experienced that bond with the members and music and Alan White was always my guy, my visceral influence in developing my musicianship.

I was so fortunate to meet Alan early in my career and grateful to become close friends during my years in the YES family performing variously with Tony, Peter, Chris, Geoff and Billy.

Alan, his wry smile and gregarious, adventurous manner was always encouraging, so supportive, fun, and above all inspiring. We shared a lot in common and had lots of laughs.

His call to me in 2016 meant the world to me. I don't have the words to describe how it's touched me, changed me. I've learned so much by his side, sharing the stage and family that is YES.

Alan will forever be in my heart, in my hands and feet, in my thoughts and prayers. I love you Alan and I will never forget all of your life lessons.

ALAN WHITE - A TRIBUTE FROM TREVOR HORN

Alan White, Steve Howe, Trevor Horn, Chris Squire, Geoff Downes.

Alan and I come from the same part of England, the North East, so when we first met in 1979 we had a lot in common.

Out of everyone in Yes, Alan was probably the easiest to get along with. This doesn't mean he didn't do some crazy shit occasionally but on a day to day basis, he was kind and long suffering. When I got him to tune his drums up high on 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' he never complained even when his crew were horrified.

He was a great musician and not only on the drums. It was Alan who thought of playing the mad big band sample triplets in the middle of 'Owner'. We all laughed so much that day. All the great drum machine programming on the song 'Leave it' was done by Alan.

When I first heard him and Chris and Steve playing together in Redan rehearsal rooms just before Geoff and I joined in 79, I was in awe of the way he and Chris had this almost telepathic communication. Just hearing the three of them close-up was one of the great musical experiences of my life.

Alan told Chris (Squire) that if he was more than 15 minutes late for a show then he (Alan) would empty the dustbin full of ice, which was in our dressing room, all over the floor. He did this a few times on the Drama tour.

When I did my 25 years of being a record producer show in 2005, not only did he play with Yes but he played on just about everything else. Good natured, slow to anger, funny and inspirational, they would be words I would use to describe him.

ALAN WHITE - A TRIBUTE FROM RICK WAKEMAN

I was in the studio recording some keyboard parts on the upcoming album when I heard the desperately sad news that we had lost Alan. I stopped work immediately and spent the rest of the day mulling over great recollections of the times we spent together, both musically and socially .

During the Going For The One tour, Alan and I were besotted with racquetball and bought the finest racquets we could and before arriving in each city, would organise 2-3 hours at a club to play before heading off, seemingly fitter (but also somewhat knackered) to sound check.

I remember him proudly introducing me to his mum, who adored him and he her. He lived in Seattle for many years with his beautiful wife Gigi, Jesse and Cassie but a large part of him remained in the North East, including his accent, which never faltered!

On our travels we talked football, cars and musicians we had both worked with and Chris Squire's appalling time-keeping!

Alan and Chris arguably formed one of the finest bass and drums pairing in the history of rock 'n roll, if not the finest.

I thank you Alan for all the great memories you have left me .

Sincere heartfelt condolences to Gigi, Cassie and Jesse who have lost such a great husband and father.

Alan was a proper Geordie – steady, powerful, no nonsense, probably didn't really like the frilly bits. He took over the reins in Yes at short notice after I moved on, and by all accounts, didn't make a fuss when he had to learn the band's repertoire in about three days.

As different men from different backgrounds with quite different styles, we had come to drumming from pretty much opposite ends of the spectrum. I quite liked the frilly bits. Geordies don't like talking about anything very much, so our mutual respect went unspoken. I know he loved the heck out of Close to the Edge as, indeed, did I. Aside from the sadness, there is something extraordinarily poetic that his life should have come to an end exactly 50 years after he picked up the sticks and gave his all to the band he came to love. He'll be forever remembered through his contribution to drumming inside and outside of Yes.

My heart goes out to Gigi and all Alan's family.

I'm infinitely sad.
I always loved Alan.
Over decades of being close,
we never had an argument.
A beautiful human.
Hard to think of a world without him.
All the best,
Trevor.

Roger Dean

It was enormously distressing to hear of the death of Alan he was a wonderful human being and very generous and open person, not to say a brilliantly talented musician. He was always great to talk to, from when I first met him when he joined Yes 50 years ago and from then until I last met with him on their last US tour. Besides all the Yes projects, it was a great privilege working with him on his solo Album "White" in 2006. His passing is very sad for all of us who knew and loved him. My thoughts and prayers are with Gigi and his family.

Steve Hackett

I'm very sad to hear of Alan White's passing. He was a good friend, a wonderful man, an amazing musician and a pivotal member of Yes for fifty years. My thoughts are very much with his wife Gigi and family, and all the members of Yes.

Declan Colgan

Tales from Topographic Oceans was the first Yes album I ever heard/bought just after it came out so it's always remained a personal favourite – it was a while before I heard the rest of the albums as I was trying to use teenage limited pocket money to hear/see as broad a range of bands as possible, so TFTO was played & played & played.

Declan Colgan, Panegyric

Alan White, Keith Emerson, Chris Squire, and Simon Kirke formed a one-off supergroup to open for the Led Zeppelin's reunion concert in 2007. They played "Fanfare for the Common Man".

Alan White was a friend of ours.

We could talk for days about his accomplishments and glorious career as a musician. But for us, he was someone who was dear to us personally.

It took me a while to write about his passing on 26 May. It was not a piece of news. It was a loss.

When Keith passed away, I received a couple of beautiful condolences bouquets at the place we lived in Santa Monica, and heartfelt notes. One of them was from the widow of Brother Jack McDuff – Keith's musical hero. The other one was from Gigi and Alan White. In chaos, devastation, and numbness, I clearly remember how I felt when those flowers were delivered. It was their compassion, kindness, and friendship that moved me.

Keith respected and loved Alan both as a colleague and a friend. Whenever they met in person, you could see genuine smiles on their faces. I think they felt like comrades who have been through several decades in the music business – all ups and downs, glories and disappointments. They understood each other without words.

My thoughts are with Gigi, Cassi, Jesse, and those who loved him.

Chris Cornell & Patrick Mahoney

Being total music fans as teenagers was something Chris and I both were before we got into our merchandising careers. And being that we grew up in the 1980's suburbs (New Jersey for Chris, Massachusetts for me) we got a steady diet of everything from Van Halen to Black Sabbath to Yes. It was all cool to us, and given this was way before the Internet, all very mysterious and exciting. Eventually, both Chris and I found punk rock and went through that brief period of the "rejection" of commercial music. But little did we realize at the time, Yes had taken a different path to get to the same place, and had made the mainstream come to them!

Either way we eventually figured out that good music was good music. I remember after we signed Yes, I was talking to Chris about Alan White and how awesome of a drummer he was and how amazing it was to have Yes on the Manhead roster. Manhead has a lot of amazing clients, but given Yes' time and place in the history of rock and roll, they get their own special spot on our marquee. It was great to meet Alan before he passed. Making merch for bands certainly pays the bills, but the extras have been real and very enjoyable.

You'd be hard pressed to know that this soft spoken, warm, funny, relaxed guy played with John Lennon and George Harrison on several of their most iconic post Beatles solo works, before going on to become the beating heart of the greatest progressive rock band in music history. Or that he didn't just learn one of rock's most demanding catalogs on a few days notice, he owned it.

You wouldn't know from his demeanor that Alan White was one of the most brilliant drummers on the planet, had sold millions of albums, and had filled stadiums and arenas for fifty years. Nothing in his demeanor said "rock star." If you were fortunate enough to know him, you'd find an easy guy to be around. A guy, who, with his wonderful wife Gigi, was not too busy to recognize the birth of a child of these admiring fans, or show genuine interest in those around him. You'd never know what he could do. Until he got on stage, where his skills did all the talking.

Much has been said about the thunderous power of his playing. Not enough has been said about his precision, his versatility, and his finesse. They were as abundant as his power. Perhaps hardest of all to quantify, and perhaps even fathom, is how he remained the calm center of the YES storm for five decades. And it was a center that held fast, and was a key to the band's enduring legacy.

Thank you Alan. Thank you for your kindness, your humor, your generosity, your friendship, and for a lifetime of joyous, wonderful music. You are with us forever.

Phil Carson

So sorry to hear of the loss of my good friend and stunning talent, Alan White. He joined the YES journey for the Close To The Edge tour in 1972 as the band went stratospheric. His importance as a musician and contributor to the band is only outweighed by his embracing and friendly personality. He was a joy to spend time with and a master musician to watch in performance.

We at Cherry Red were saddened to hear the news about Alan. We have had the pleasure of working with him on a number of albums over the years and always found him to be a true gentleman and without doubt one of the most talented musicians of his generation.

Our thoughts are with his family as well as his YES family too, rest in peace and we will do our best to keep his musical legacy alive.

Adam Valasco MD, Cherry Red Records

Mark Powell

I was most saddened to hear of Alan White's passing. His music has been with me most of my life, from his wonderful work with Yes and his solo album, his immense contributions to albums such as Imagine by John Lennon, All Things Must Pass by George Harrison and the perhaps more obscure, but no less worthy Bell & Arc album. Alan was a marvellous musician and will be sorely missed, but his musical legacy will live on for many years to come. I send my sincere condolences to his friends and family.

Mark Powell, Esoteric Recordings

Joe Comeau

It took me nearly a week to write this because frankly there are no words. So I'm not going to try to find the words now. I'll just say that we all lost a wonderful man last week. Alan White of YES has passed away. He was a great drummer and musician who played with YES, John Lennon, George Harrison, The Plastic Ono Band, Joe Cocker and Ginger Baker, among many others.

He was an even greater man. Humble, sweet, warm and with the biggest heart. His light will always shine. I was lucky to call him my close friend for almost 15 years. Alan, you touched my life in so many positive ways, I will always be grateful.

I will miss you. Your friends & family will miss you. The world will miss you. We will always feel your presence. We will hear your music and laughter till the end of days. Bless you Alan White, until we all see you again one day.

The Album Series Tour 2023

YES MANAGEMENT ANNOUNCE CHANGE TO EUROPEAN TOUR DATES

It is with great disappointment YES announce that the logistical problems of arranging European tour dates for 2022, caused by the on-going pandemic, have proved insurmountable. YES have taken the decision, for the safety of band members, crew and audiences, to reschedule all mainland European dates to 2023. This has allowed us to add back in the Rockhal in Luxembourg, which we were unable to accommodate in the 2022 tour.

Tickets for all rescheduled shows remain valid for the new dates.

Geoff Downes: "We're really looking forward to getting back onstage and performing for our fans. Relayer will be special."

The tour line-up features Steve Howe (guitars), Geoff Downes (keyboards), Jon Davison (vocals), Billy Sherwood (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Jay Schellen (drums and percussion).

As previously announced, the show will comprise full production and a high-definition video wall. The show will include favourite classic tracks from YES' extensive catalogue together with Relayer, the seventh studio album by YES and one of the band's most distinctive, in full. Relayer marked a slight change in direction as Patrick Moraz replaced Rick Wakeman on keyboards bringing an edgier, avant-garde feel to the album. This was perfect for the opening track Gates Of Delirium, almost 22 minutes in length, with its battle scene featuring the keyboard of Moraz and Steve.

Roger Dean will be directing the production and joining the tour with an exhibition of YES related art.

The 2022 UK & Ireland dates remain the same and will be a 50th Anniversary Celebration of Close To The Edge.
